inspiration(art+sports):world cup fever

Let me be clear. I have never really watched the World Cup. I’ve tried to get into it, I really have… but I’m simply not a soccer fan. That being said, I will try to get into it again this summer. Why? The awesome posters that ESPN has been using to promote the World Cup have piqued my interest.

I’ve seen them individually on the side of bus stops, but it wasn’t until I saw all of them together plastered on the Port Authority building that I really stopped to notice them. There are 33 different posters out, each representing a participating country.  Each poster really seems to tell the story behind each team. It makes me wish that I knew the players in order to get the references.  Even in my soccer ignorance, they are still captivating pieces and they did a good job getting  a soccer noob  excited to tune in.

You check out and download all of the posters at ESPN’s facebook page. You can also check out this blog to get explanations of each poster.

inspiration(music videos): “you’ve changed”

I’m surprised I haven’t posted a music video here before.  I think it’s because I don’t really see them anymore.  They only get shown late nite on the music channels when Jersey Shore isn’t on, so I sometimes forget to check out people’s vids online. I love interesting, quirky, and/or innovative music videos. At one point in college, I even thought I was going to be a music video director. Then I came to my senses lol.  Anyway, I might post some old videos that I find inspiring (most of Michel Gondry’s!).   In the meantime here  is Sia’s lo-tech video game parody. I like the song as well, and I’m looking forward to the new album.

Happy New Year from Fotogirl!

There will be more posts to come in ‘10! :)

new/work(photos): tour of the high line

I’ve been fascinated by the High Line for some years now. I mean, who doesn’t love abandoned train tracks? There’s been only  one issue standing in the way of my decrepit mecca: it’s not  open to the general public. There are plans to turn it into a public space…but then it wouldn’t be abandoned, now would it?? Sadly, no. ;)   Fortunately, my friend and fellow lover of all things crumbly and deserted let me know about Open House NY. One weekend a year, people get access to buildings, landmarks, and other establishments that are usually off limits or restricted. I was delighted to find the High Line was on that list.

I was discouraged to find that a ton of other people were delighted as well. There were so many delighted people, a lottery had to created to determine who was eligible for the tour. My friend and I both signed up and kept our fingers crossed, and sure enough I recieved a lovely email saying, “Congratulations! Out of 5,000 people who entered the lottery for High Line tours during openhousenewyork weekend, you have received one of 700 tour slots.” SWEET!

The tour only lasted a 1/2 hour, but my friend and I made the most of our time and got some cool shots of the area. We were surprised that we were pretty much the only ones wielding a camera. Some people actually wanted to go JUST for the tour. Go figure. I wish they gave us more time to wander around the area, but I’m just happy we were lucky enough to check it out before it becomes a park. Not that a park wouldn’t be nice…

Why do I have a blog?

Well, the name gives you the main reason ;) , but aside from that, I’m using this blog as my personal sketchbook of sorts. I hope to use this blog as a place to post anything that inspires or intrigues me, as well as new work and ideas (which may or may not be a direct result of the things that inspire and intrigue me). The inspiration can come in the form of music or most anything visual. I’m not quite sure why I’m putting this out into cyberspace, when I could easily keep this to myself. I guess I figure that if I put it out for the world to see (which will probly still only be me lol), I’ll actually stick with it and update it! And if something I like inspires someone else, then all the better.

*For those who don’t know, the title of this blog comes from my fav South Park quote when Cartman appears on Maury as a wayward teenage girl. “Whateva! Whateva! I’ll do what I want!” Find it on youtube. Seriously.
